With the Republican presidential primaries approaching, the field of candidates remains open. However, the search for potential running mates for former President Donald Trump, the current front-runner, is quietly taking place.
In a speech in Florida, Trump acknowledged that several people are “auditioning” for the role. As a former president, Trump is focusing on creating a sense of inevitability around his campaign, particularly with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis emerging as a strong opponent within the GOP.
While Trump’s campaign team isn’t actively discussing potential vice presidential candidates, some politicians have capitalized on opportunities to be near Trump at various events, including CPAC. Notable figures include Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Elise Stefanik, and Kari Lake.
According to insiders, Trump isn’t in a hurry to choose his running mate but has been considering options, including his preference for a female candidate. In contrast to his 2016 choice of Mike Pence, Trump now seeks a running mate who shares more similarities with him.
Many believe Elise Stefanik would be an ideal choice, while Kari Lake won a straw poll at CPAC for the best potential VP. Although Lake’s focus is on serving as Arizona Governor, she is committed to helping Trump return to the White House. Marjorie Taylor Greene is also reportedly in the running, and Elise Stefanik has been working quietly to garner Trump’s support.
The selection of Trump’s running mate will have significant implications for the 2024 election and the Republican Party’s future.
