Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), the self-proclaimed socialist from New York, is once again in the news for all the wrong reasons.
The non-partisan Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) found that her appearance at the Met Gala in 2021, where she wore a dress with the words “tax the rich”, broke federal laws by accepting impermissible gifts associated with her night out with celebrities.
The cost of admission alone to the Met Gala is $30,000, and the dress was billed at over $40,000.
AOC’s response to the investigation was to blame a former staffer who had supposedly not notified her of the unpaid expenses related to the dress and the stylists who helped her get ready for the event. She told investigators that she wasn’t privy to the invoices and was deeply regretful about the situation, especially for the small businesses that were impacted. The balance for the rental fees for everything has now been paid, but only after the OCE contacted her about their review of her activities.
It’s not surprising that AOC is trying to deflect blame, as she often portrays herself as a champion for the underprivileged and the working class. However, this latest incident highlights her hypocrisy and disregard for the law.
It’s clear that she has no qualms about breaking the same laws she claims to be fighting against, all while using her position to enrich herself and her cronies.
Unfortunately, the current DOJ is unlikely to take action against AOC, so this investigation will likely be swept under the rug. But this doesn’t change the fact that AOC has once again shown that she is not the hero she claims to be.
Her behavior is a prime example of the kind of elitist, out-of-touch politicians that voters are tired of. It’s time for real change in Washington, and it’s up to the American people to hold their elected officials accountable.
