Julian Castro, a prominent figure in the Democratic Party and a former candidate who ran against President Biden in the 2020 presidential nomination, has recently raised concerns about the president’s electability in 2024.
In an article published by The New York Times on Monday, Castro highlighted what he perceives as a “softness” surrounding Biden’s electability, suggesting that some people doubt whether the president has delivered on his campaign promises.
Castro acknowledged that while Biden has accomplished a lot during his time in office, there are areas where his performance has fallen short of expectations. Specifically, Castro pointed out voting rights, immigration reform, police reform, and climate change as issues where Biden has not fully delivered on his promises.
It’s worth noting that Castro and Biden clashed frequently during the 2019 campaign, with Castro initially endorsing Senator Elizabeth Warren before eventually throwing his support behind Biden. Despite their differences, Castro’s concerns about Biden’s electability indicate a growing sentiment within the Democratic Party.
Biden is not only facing challenges from within his own party, but recent polls have also raised questions about his popularity. Two Democratic primary challengers, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Marianne Williamson, have emerged as contenders, with Kennedy already showing strong polling numbers. This suggests that Biden’s grip on the Democratic nomination is not as secure as it may seem.
Interestingly, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) has decided against holding primary debates for this election cycle, providing cover for Biden and shielding him from potential challenges within his party. When asked about the possibility of Biden debating Kennedy, several House Democrats dismissed the idea, labeling Kennedy as a “fringe candidate.”
Marianne Williamson, another Democratic candidate, has criticized the DNC’s decision, arguing that it stifles democracy and suppresses the voices of Biden’s opponents. She believes that the American people should have the opportunity to witness these debates and make informed decisions about who should be the next president.
As Biden’s electability concerns continue to grow, it remains to be seen how he will address these challenges within his own party and whether he will face a more competitive primary race than anticipated.
