Several Republican candidates running in a crowded special primary election in Ohio’s 15th congressional district are embracing former President Donald Trump’s endorsement in a bid to win the nomination and secure a path to Congress.
The crowded race features 11 GOP candidates running for the nomination to fill the seat left vacant by Rep. Steve Stivers’ resignation in May. The winner of the Aug. 3 primary will face off against a Democratic opponent in November’s general election.
Trump endorsed Mike Carey, a coal industry lobbyist and political newcomer, in the race earlier this week, calling Carey a “fighter” who would be tough on immigration and crime. Several other Republican candidates in the race have sought to align themselves with the former president’s policies and positions in the hopes of securing his endorsement as well.
The Ohio congressional race is seen as an important test for both the Republican Party and Trump, who has faced questions about his political influence following his loss in the 2020 presidential election and the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol by his supporters.
Winning the Ohio congressional seat could be a morale boost for Republicans ahead of the 2022 midterm elections, while a loss could be seen as a blow to Trump’s political influence within the party.
