In a stunning display of audacity, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., launched a scathing attack on CNN for hosting a town hall with former President Trump. She declared that the network “should be ashamed of themselves” for allowing him a platform to spread election disinformation, defend the events of January 6th, and even attack a sexual abuse victim.
Ocasio-Cortez took to Twitter to voice her outrage, asserting that CNN had completely lost control of the event.
“This falls squarely on CNN,” she boldly declared. “Everyone here saw exactly what was going to happen. Instead, they put a sexual abuse victim in harm’s way for views. This was a choice to platform lies about the election & Jan 6th w/ no plan but to have their moderator interrupted without consequence.”
During the town hall, moderated by CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, President Trump steadfastly maintained his stance that the 2020 election was rigged, despite Collins’ persistent objections.
He also addressed topics such as abortion, the promised border wall, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and other pressing issues. Trump’s unyielding confidence and strong defense of his positions resonated with the predominantly Republican audience, who responded with cheers and applause.
Ocasio-Cortez continued her assault on CNN during her appearance on MSNBC, condemning the network for promoting “atrocious disinformation.” She labeled their decision to host the event as “profoundly irresponsible” and expressed her obligation to speak out against it. “I don’t think I would be doing my job if I did not say that… It was shameful,” she asserted.
The announcement of Trump’s appearance on CNN had already stirred controversy among left-leaning individuals, given his highly publicized conflicts with the network throughout his presidency.
Some CNN staff members were reportedly angered by how the event unfolded, as Trump’s comments garnered widespread support from the audience. At one point, he even playfully referred to Collins as a “nasty person,” eliciting cheers from the crowd.
Ocasio-Cortez was not the only outspoken liberal to denounce Trump’s town hall on CNN. Critics argued that Collins failed to fact-check him adequately or that she was put in an untenable position due to the partisan nature of the audience. Others accused CNN CEO Chris Licht of prioritizing ratings over journalistic integrity.
The town hall, held at Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire, took place just a day after a New York jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing writer E. Jean Carroll, although he was not held liable for the rape accusation.
Trump vehemently dismissed the verdict and dismissed Carroll as a “wack job,” insisting that he had never even met her and labeling her story as fabricated.
Despite the backlash from liberals and critics, Trump’s team celebrated the success of the CNN town hall. Spokeswoman Liz Harrington hailed his performance as “masterful” and commended his ability to handle the “Fake News” with ease.
The event clearly demonstrated that the former president still commands a significant following and maintains a strong position within the GOP field. With polls consistently placing him as the frontrunner, Trump’s influence and appeal remain undeniable.
