The most anticipated day for the Biden administration’s border security crisis is upon us, and it’s causing quite a stir. On May 11, the Title 42 public health emergency ended, marking the end of the only remaining measure of border enforcement under this administration. And let me tell you, the situation is dire.
For the past 27 months, our nation has been plagued by an unprecedented humanitarian and security crisis at the southern border. This is not an exaggeration; it’s the harsh reality. And unfortunately, it’s about to get even worse. As of tomorrow, migrants crossing the border unlawfully will face no consequences under the Biden administration’s policies. And guess who knows it? The cartels and the migrants themselves.
Starting Friday, all illegal aliens apprehended at the southern border will be put into immigration proceedings under Title 8, but here’s the catch – they will be subject to “expedited removal.” Sounds effective, right? Wrong. It’s merely smoke and mirrors.
What the administration conveniently fails to mention is the glaring loophole in expedited removal that the cartels coach aliens to exploit. They can simply claim asylum, regardless of how dubious their claim may be. And the sad truth is, only a small percentage, around 10-15%, will actually qualify for asylum when they finally go before an immigration judge years later.
But here’s the thing: there is a sensible alternative that we’ve seen work before. Remember the Remain in Mexico policy established during the Trump administration? That’s a prime example of providing genuine humanitarian protections to those who qualify without releasing a flood of illegal aliens into American communities. And it worked. Fewer fraudulent asylum claims were made when migrants had to wait in Mexico until their court date.
Unfortunately, the Biden administration is all about misdirection. Sending a last-minute surge of 1,500 National Guard troops to the border may sound impressive, but don’t be fooled. They won’t have the authority to enforce the law. Instead, they’ll be stuck with administrative and processing duties. It’s a desperate attempt to salvage a situation they failed to adequately prepare for.
And let’s not forget about the new asylum rule they announced on May 10. They claim it will impose harsh penalties on illegal aliens, and the media echo their sentiment, calling it a revival of a Trump-era regulation. But don’t be fooled by the rhetoric. The rule is riddled with loopholes that perpetuate the trafficking of vulnerable migrant children and allow adults to recycle kids to form fake families.
The Biden administration loves to make excuses, claiming they are “working within significant constraints” and blaming Congress for not providing enough funding or changing immigration laws. But the truth is, their policies are ineffective, and the disaster at the border is a direct result of their actions.
So, where do we go from here? We need a change in enforcement posture at the border. Border Patrol agents must be deployed to enforce the law, not just man processing centers. Deterrence is key to upholding the rule of law and protecting vulnerable migrants from the clutches of cartels.
Furthermore, the administration needs to take responsibility for its failures and be honest with the American people. Recent polls show that the majority of voters believe it’s crucial to secure the border, but they have little faith in the Biden administration’s efforts.
In light of this, the House of Representatives is set to pass H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act. This bill offers real solutions that prioritize American interests. It includes measures like reestablishing the successful Remain in Mexico policy, raising the credible fear standard to prevent asylum abuse, restoring parole to its original intent, and mandating E-Verify to ensure a legal workforce.
